Lubricants – Do you have them covered?

Lubricants and Oils are vital to the smooth operation of your car. The primary functions of these lubricants are to cool and protect components with metal to metal contact by reducing friction between them. People regularly check the engine oi, brake and power steering fluid levels.  A few go a bit further to check the transmission fluid level (for vehicles equipped with a dip sticks for this). To get the best out of your vehicle, you need three things to be on point with these oils – The Levels, The Specification and the Life left in the fluids.

However, particularly for All Wheel Drive (AWD) vehicles, there are addition fluids that need to be checked – Transfer Case Oils and Differential Oils (Trans-Axle in some vehicles). It is important to be conversant with the OEM requirements of these fluids for your vehicle. This is key because the frequency of these changes are limited, and as a result, knowledge of their requirements are not as widespread as they are for engine and gearbox lubricants.

The Transfer case is a component that allows your vehicle to send power to the front or rear wheels depending on which wheel has the more grip or is slipping. It is usually closely mounted to the gear box. The Differential allows the different wheels to rotate at different speeds. There is a lot of information about these online and this piece is not supposed to be a crash course on how these devices work. 

Depending on your driving conditions, these fluids may require more or less frequent changes. If you intend to get the maximum life out of your vehicle’s drive train, you need to ensure these fluids are changed at the required intervals. Missing one or two changes won’t make a difference, and you may feel these changes do not matter. However, your AWD systems may begin degrade and may fail ultimately.The key question to ask yourself today is – When last did you have your Differential and Transfer Case fluids checked and replaced?
